I'm back from our family trip to Malaysia. We had fun playing Scrabble, Rummikub, Pictionary, and they all got sunburned while swimming. The resort wasn't very well-maintained, so I didn't really like it, but at least my bed was nice. Labels: church
Haha, once I asked them, "What do you miss most from home?" This is presuming we had nice accommodation stuff. The answers ranged from Internet use to the guinea pig. I really missed my laptop, with all the music inside.
I got to eat durian!!! What a miracle! We bought 3 durians from the night market, where we also ate our dinner, comprising satay, kebabs in a bun, goreng pisang, chicken, nasi lemak...
So my brother, sister, brother-in-law and I returned today, while my parents and younger sisters are staying at another place in Malaysia. My brother-in-law was driving at 140-160 km/h, and I was clinging on for dear life! Or else sleeping.
Right when we reached back, we had to bathe quickly and then rush off to church because my brother had band practice for the Watchnight Service tomorrow. I audienced their performance, and I think the singers' mikes need to be louder, or else they'll be overpowered by the musicians.
Then at 7, we went down for the Church Annual Dinner. Then Louis told me they already had 10 people for the Juniors table, and apparently I wasn't one of the 10. I was getting very worried, and Tan Whenn and Dustin were being mean! Haha.
In the end, we squeezed 11 people round the table: Xuan, Dustin, Hongyu, Rachel Wong, Louis, Rachel Ng, Andrea, Jeremy, Ian, Michelle Ng and Christopher.
Christopher was practically sleeping or stoning throughout the dinner, and probably ate less than anyone else.
We played plenty of bridge, even while eating. My poor new deck of cards got bits of soup / food on them I think. It included slapping down a green songsheet on the table, dealing on it, and keeping our sets beside our plates.
We also hid the cards when Rev Chong and Rev Leow walked near, but not when Rev Ng came before the dinner, or when Uncle Daniel took incriminating photos of us.
I think the last time I went for a church annual dinner was 3 years ago or so. That one was a really big event, and held in a nice hotel-ish place. And as always, the EJMYF table is placed in a corner where the noise they make will make the least disturbance. Hmm.
It was fun,

Today I went to church at 10.30 for the skit practice. It's the same skit we presented at the Youth Alpha Introductory Dinner, and now we're doing it again for the Watchnight Service this New Year's Eve.
Previously, the cast was:
God/Jesus - Joshua (what coincidental naming: Jesus ~ Joshua)
Man - Marcus
Smoker - Nicolette
Alcoholic - Tan Juen
Gambler - Nathanael
And I sang the ending song. Darn, my voice sucks.
Now, the 3 vices have been replaced by 3 people from the CJMYF, Shi Min, Si Kai and He Jun respectively. On a side note, Si Kai is my cousin's cousin. Just like Linus.
Hmm. Actually, that makes him Linus' cousin. But he didn't know lah. About my being Lorraine and Laura's cousin, that is. I'm sure he knew he was Linus' cousin.
Then after that, with naught but a lollipop and a few biscuits for lunch, we had choir practice, with a grand total of about 17 people singing. And zero soprano 2s. Ms Lim was really quite nice to us, considering how few people there were.
As to how productive my time was at home, I spent some time listening to Fighting Spirit of Dong Bang - the official image song for Korea World Cup 2006 by DBSG. It is an extremely nice song. After watching and hearing the video, I really feel like supporting Korea.
And then I was comparing the English lyrics to Korean lyrics, trying to see whether I learn some words in Korean. Then I remembered that In Hye gave me an English-Korean dictionary, which was slightly useful.
After dinner I packed my stuff for Malaysia, and spent time looking through this OLD MGS School Magazine 1997 edition, i.e. Xuan was Primary 1. And virtually unrecognizable as Xuan. I was reminiscing about my MGS days. I wish I could go back to P1. With my current brain.
P.S. If ANYONE has Dong Bang Shin Gi songs, pleasepleaseplease send me. Thanks!

Today is Christmas! And I didn't go for carolling partially because I was somewhat sick, and also so I could go for Christmas service. Sorry to everyone in choir who was there at Sheraton. We sang many carols at church, including: Labels: church
What Child is This,
The First Noel,
Hark the Herald,
O Come All Ye Faithful,
Angels from the Realm of Glory,
We Three Kings...
I was really sorry to have missed the Christmas party last night, but after hearing how they slept very late, somewhere around 5am or so, and seeing how some of them fell asleep during the sermon, I just laughed at them.
I love Christmas. It took some years for me to realise I don't really care about the presents. Because We need to know that the only reason why we celebrate Christmas is so that we can remember how Jesus Christ came to earth as an infant, and that He came to offer salvation to everyone who believes.
[ Jesus is the reason for the season. ]
It IS important that He came as a child. Imagine if you were God, in all your awesome glory and everything, then having to come down to earth as this helpless little baby who has to grow up among humans, who are by no means perfect in the least. And then he had to spend another 30-something years as a human. Yuck. It's like asking us to become like ants.
Plus, I dislike how people type / write "Merry X'mas". For goodness sake, X is usually used to represent something unknown. It's CHRISTMAS. It means Christ Come. Not "something represented by X" has come.
On a totally unrelated note, I'm really getting into DBSG. Includes watching music videos, asking random people for their music, watching whatever about them looks interesting. Gah.
Of the five, I think Youngwoong Jaejoong is the best looking. And this is because he looks girly. Really bishounen-ish. It's a bit sad though, that unless you're really good-looking, the only way to be good-looking is to look girly.
Or at least you can aim for 'cute'. Like Choikang Changmin and Xiah Junsu. I watched this tv show where they had mini DBSG, and the mini Junsu was cute beyond belief! And they look alike too!
Peace on earth and goodwill to men,

Well, there's a minute or so left till Christmas.
I got to watch Ella Enchanted on tv after coming back from carolling.
I really wish I had been able to go for the Juniors Christmas gathering thing, it sounds like they had a lot of fun.
Other than that, I've been going a little crazy over Dong Bang Shin Gi, and their songs and videos. At least they can really sing, even acapella, and they're mostly good-looking too. Haha.
Merry Christmas,

Today in church almost everyone in Juniors wore red or green! Well, mine wasn't really green, but turquoise is the closest I have. Even those who weren't informed mostly either wore white, black, yellow or orange. Even the reds had some pinks and maroons, while the greens had lime and aqua. So we were a jolly bright bunch. Labels: church
During Juniors we were given this poll to see which time slot was preferred for Juniors, since everything's gonna change next year. It's so annoying, because I don't like change. I voted for keeping it on Sunday, mainly because I don't want to have to travel there twice a week. Plus, a lot of stuff goes on on Saturdays as well.
Then I had to go up to the pulpit to talk a bit about the camp, and I stupidly forgot to thank half the stuff I had meant to, including God for the good weather and keeping everyone safe, Delia for being our Camp Advisor, and the worship exco for coming on tuesday for extended worship!
Well, as the title says, I had my family Christmas dinner tonight, including my sister, brother-in-law and cousin. There was spaghetti carbonara, smoked chicken, turkey, salad, sausage, bread, apple stroodle, ice-cream...
I've also been attempting my sister's Rubix cube; she's been trying to teach me.
Right now I really wish I didn' have to go for carolling for either day. Because the one on the 24th means I can't go for the random unofficial Juniors Christmas Party at Michelle's house.
And then the one on the 25th totally clashes with Christmas Service.
I feel utterly stupid for signing up for the 25th Dec carolling and assuming that like last year, Christmas service would be on Sunday. Now I can't go for Christmas service! It's a crime in itself. *cries*
Sigh,
The Xuan

Well, I just came back from our Juniors camp today, and I think it was a GOOD CAMP. Labels: church
I have many people I'm thankful for:
1. My camp committee - Yihui, Jane, Selena, Michelle Ng, Yingxuan, Marcus, Christopher, Joanna and Delia. Every one of them did their job well, and I didn't have to do a thing.
2. The seniors, a.k.a saikang warriors. They really helped out a lot, including coming up with a very structured night game, improvising on our games, buying stuff from the convenience store, cleaning toilets...
3. Rev Wilfred Leow, for teaching us about Lectio Divina, Bible study, praying for people, and spending so much of his time with us, away from his family. Also Uncle Sunny, who had to constantly open the gate for random people coming in and out of church at late hours, opening the seminar room, helping us with the mattresses, etc.
4. Rev Chong for buying us potong ice-cream, and Aunty Julie for the spaghetti, and Aunty Beow Tuan for the nasi lemak and beehoon.
5. The worship exco, who came down on Tuesday to share about worship with us (Uncle Su Ming), to lead an extended worship session, and praying for all the youths who stepped up to the call.
6. All the campers, who participated enthusiastically; even if I thought the games weren't fun they still appreciated it all, and for being good angels to their mortals.
7. Most of all, we want to thank God - for the good weather, for keeping everyone safe, for allowing them to have an encounter with Him when they really needed it, for the growing of 3 person's hands to allow us to increase our faith in a way that is not head knowledge, and for answering the prayers of so many people.
If nothing else, this was an interesting camp:
- Some of the shorter hands of people who had uneven hands grew longer with prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit
- One of my sisters slipped and fell and hit her head, while the other nearly got hit by a taxi. Nicholas had fever and vomiting, Camilla was perpetually sniffing, Callista was on medication and had an ingrown toenail, Michelle Foo cut her finger on the water gun, etc.
- Mostly everyone got to put army camouflage paint on their faces, and they all looked so cool!
- The black market set up for the angel & mortal game was quite successful
- On the last night, SOME PEOPLE took my cards, so I couldn't play bridge, and I tried to sleep with some 20 other people in the room making noise. Obviously I failed.
- I've finally managed to learn the whole l e r o y gang story, and why I'm the commander-mentor.
- I'm also convinced that Marcus, Chris and Jeremy ought to make a published story about it. Either novel, short stories, comic strips or television.
- It was my one and only experience of being Camp Commandant. Maybe I wasn't calm enough, or yelled too much, and I don't think people really respected me, but it was quite fun.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
The Xuan

Well, I recently came back from choir camp. It's like I barely spent 4 days at home after Korea, and then I went off for choir camp. And on Sunday night I'm going for Juniors Camp. And sometime after Christmas I think we're going to Malaysia.
It seems rather paradoxical that even though it was a camp that was partially meant for having more practices for our songs, I felt as though it was a very slack camp.
Besides practice, Sheena and Xuemin led the games, including wrapping poor Michelle Koh in toilet paper, wearing icy wet socks, passing quail eggs via spoon-in-mouth, and the traditional water games, in which paint was mysteriously involved. We also have a scandalous picture of LC and Jaymie.
Then there was the singing of carols at night at the raintree. That was fun, because I like carols, and singing at night with everyone seated in a circle is strangely invigorating. I only wish we were singing all of them for our Sheraton performance, especially Silver Bells.
We also had a bunch of seniors, including Chye Keong, Chee Jun, Jiahao, Xingqun, Zhirui, Chengluan, Chuwen, Yueh Hsin, and even Hua Cheng, who parked his motorbike outside the main gate.
I'm amused by how when I asked CK and HC whether it was ok for them to go home late or just stay in school, they simply replied, "I'm 21/22." As if that explains everything.
We also had an Ice-Cream Party, complete with M&Ms, marshmallows, and Lays Chips Barbecue flavour! Yum Yum. Much thanks to Ms Lim for not killing us for eating all these bad things. Also thanks to the teachers for the candy cane. I think it saved many a throat.
Finally, we had fun playing handball / captain's ball. ST vs. AB, then 1s vs. 2s. I think the funniest part was when LC decided to be commentator. "And JAJA Binks catches the ball!" "Oxmin passes TO EUGENE" as a hint to pass it to said tenor1. "And he passes to commentator, and GOAL!" [prematurely.]
After that we went to Newton Circus to have dinner, where much talk of food, money, Hitler, and Ann's chu lian ensued. Then CS, Sheena and I took the 170 home. Yay.
Everytime I see someone, if they know I've been to Korea, they'll ask how it was, and I'll say how fun / excellent / great is was and how I want to go back. Labels: ksa
I suppose then they'll think that I just went there to have fun (bar research) by sightseeing and having a good time with friends old and new.
But I think I can say that I may just have learnt something over there.
At least, I learnt not to judge people by what they look, or what you think they're like, because first impressions are usually lacking. People generally have a not-so-obvious depth to them that you don't know until you interact more with them.
For example, Person A seemed to be a normal, not noisy, slightly nerdy/smart person. But after interacting more with Person A, I found Person A to be a lot more interesting and funny and crazy than I initially thought the person was. Perhaps people are different at 11.45 pm.
Another one, Person B struck me as the kind who was popular, and with a somewhat lack of open friendliness that sometimes accompanies such popular people to people who aren't. But again, after a bit more interaction, Person B turned out to be a rather nice person, the kind who talks to you when you look bored / left out, and offers to carry stuff for you.
I had a similar impression of Person C as of Person B, but Person C also turned out to be unexpectedly nice to people who may not be in the same league as said person. And so on and so forth.
Also, I learnt that there probably more things that are shared across people of different nations than I realised before. And I am a person who believes strongly in the importance of verbal communication.
Well, that all goes kaput when you go to a country where language and talking becomes problematic.
Perhaps there exists a certain sort of mutual understanding between peers...
Like the idea of sneaking alcohol when teachers aren't there to stop you, and making sure they don't find out; the tiny rush of excitement when you dash across a road, only reaching the other side 3 seconds after the light turns red.
Or the way singing karaoke or playing billiards is something that students from Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia can enjoy; the love of having snacks at random hours; the fun in taking silly retarded photos or jump shots.
Most of all, the happiness in spending time with your friends, new and old, and the sadness in the final rite of saying goodbye to them for what seems to be forever.
Maybe we're not so different after all. And that makes all the difference in the world.
Thank God for everything,
The Xuan

The wonderful people in this memorable trip to KSA:
Miss Lim Weili – She’s just like one of us! More of a friend than a teacher to us. Especially when we tease her about HIM. Haha! She always uses words like ‘xiao’, announces that she’s going out of the room to fart, and talks about her mao-mao!
Shiqi – LOLLOLLOL! Amazing how she can survive without breakfast. Plus she has cool boots. Really! She was great during that last minute presentation we had to make in front of the 1st graders.
Jolene – She was super funny when recounting her home stay experience! And she can really shop. In the first half she spent more money than I had brought! And she bought back this huge teddy bear, which they tried to squeeze into this cardboard box.
Cassandra – Cass Beer! She’s always saying how her hair has static, haha... and she was very helpful when I was trying to get the wireless connection on my stupid laptop. She took some very interesting neoprints with her buddy. Hmm.
Melissa – I think it’s so cool that she plays dota. Seriously. And we agreed that we were being dian deng pao when we went in a taxi with her buddy and mine. And the way she poses for photos is really funny sometimes.
Theophila – I never knew she could be so funny! She can just keep saying funny lame stuff non-stop, in funny fake voices! And she’s too tall. Not fair. And I wish I had her camera functions leh. About the buddy thing, I think she was very good about it. If it were me, I’d be complaining non-stop.
Yanyao – Thanks for listening to my crazy idea about the talent-sucking machine. And she really bought a lot of stuff for her younger brother. I think she’s become a pro at doing all the pipette stuff for our experiment. And she also watches Nodame Cantabile!
Wern Chia – She is seriously the most happening girl here. She plays billiards or whatever until goodness knows how late, comes back the latest, bathes the latest, sleeps the latest. And we formed the “take a lot of pictures with everyone club” together!
Teresa – Yay, my roommate! I would have really been in trouble without her help in everything, from helping me wash the chocolate-milk stained pants to always jaga-ing when I’m bathing. She’s always got some snack stashed in the cupboard, and does her work conscientiously every night! And it’s great talking to her when the lights are out and we can’t sleep.
William – Samara permed his hair! Very daring of him, I must say. I envy how he has the ability to make friends with practically everyone – Singaporean, Korean or Russian. He also eats the most, plays soccer with all of them, and always goes to Dae Sik and Jae Hyun’s room.
Ji Jeong – My home stay buddy! She’s really nice, she likes to sleep, shop, and sings superbly! Her family rocks, they’re so kind to me. And she had a boyfriend, but never told me, even when I asked about the whole girls being the rarity situation. The nerve!
Ji Eun – My other buddy! Her English is PRO. I have a much easier time communicating with her than anyone else with their buddies, I believe. And she’s quite tall too. Silly girl’s dieting now, even though she totally doesn’t need to. She also plays the violin and piano. She and Ji Soo ought to get together.
Ji Soo – Haha, we decided he looks like a teddy bear, albeit with a sharper face, as Ji Eun kindly pointed out. He’s bad at Hanja, but his Hangeul pronunciation is good and clear. Everytime we tease him about Ji Eun he always shakes his head / finger saying ‘no, no, no.’
Coby – He’s got no eyes! And he really looks like some Chinese character, I just can’t figure out who. And I think he’s kind of scared of me, because every time I see him I’ll ask him about Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi. He also smiles a lot.
Cheol Huan – He’s the ultimate at teasing Ji Eun and Ji Soo. And once when we went out he just kept giving that all-knowing smirk at Ji Soo, while pretending to be innocent of any wrong thought! His jacket had the mao-mao too!
Jeong Huan – Whoa, he’s quite forward when it comes to his buddy, haha! And his singing isn’t bad, even when he screams the high notes. He’s rather nice, and he had to interview NJ people at the end about the programme.
Dae Sik – This guy isn’t human. He plays both the guitar and violin insanely well, is the violin SL, the concert master, student conductor, has perfect pitch, is the acapella head, plays billiards like a pro, plays soccer, and is nice and funny. He ought to be cloned. Or shot.
Song Jin – He’s very funny when he doesn’t understand what we’re saying, and looks blur. And he learned billiards from beggars! I felt sorry for him when he had to accompany us at the duty-free shop. But at least he was gentlemanly enough to offer to carry the bag.
Yosub – Yoda! That guy merrily dumped 2 presents in bags for me to bring up on the plane right when we were going to leave the school! Obviously the heavier one was for Jess. It was really nice of him to take us out and help with the fireworks.
In Hyi – He’s still learning new Singlish! And he achieved this emo look. He’s a self proclaimed mugger, and always comes in halfway when we’re eating late-night chicken. Maybe he’ll really become some CEO and travel around the world!
Mi Kyeong – She’s so sweet, and was the first one to tell us that we were going out on Sunday. I hear she told some of them some ghost stories that freaked them out. And she can be blur enough to lend someone her phone, walk away and promptly forget that she lent it.
Jae Hyun – He wasn’t an official buddy, but really seemed like one. He’s really funny, laughs a lot, is ever ready to take a photo, a pro at taping up boxes, always orders more food for us, always says sorry, and would make a good house-husband!
Hyun Bin – He’s really tall! And the first thing he said after I introduced myself as Jess’ friend was to say, “You’re Moo-Moo?” His English has this nice accent, I think he also lived in England or something for a time. He has a marvellous ‘stone’ face during photos.
Unfortunately I can't remember all the buddies' names, especially not the homestay ones. But I remember them by labelling them:
Cass' homestay buddy, who was in my buddy's English class.
Shiqi's 1st buddy, reminded me of a polar bear first time I saw him, cause of his coat.
Jolene's homestay buddy, is it Min-Gyu? He's VERY TALL.
Mel's 1st buddy, I think he took a photo of us on the last night.
Jolene's 2nd buddy, looks perpetually sleepy, friend of my buddy.
Teresa's 1st buddy, we went for his Chinese class.
Girl in the Korean Percussion group. also starred in that Christian performance thing.
Guy who looks like a gu-niang, also plays french horn in the orchestra, and singing in musical.
Girl who looks like a guy, seen with another girl in the dorm.
Girl mistaken for tomboy, is a 1st violinist of the orchestra.
Girl from my buddy's chemistry class with good English, in the kendo club.
My buddies' friends, the group of girls I ate dinner with after the home stay.
From the English discussion team:
Eugene, quite a short fellow.
Guy who watches anime, plays trumpet, in acapella.
Guy with a lot of white hair, in robot soccer club and buddy's chem class.
Above all, I think the people there were what made the trip the most enjoyable.

Darn, I'm home. Labels: ksa
I'm really sad that the KSA adventure is over, and that I'm never going back there again. It was one of the best experiences of my life!
I wish I'd go to sleep tonight, and wake up tomorrow to Downtown or some oldie song they always play, and then hear the loud Korean voice at 6.40 telling everyone they have 40 minutes to get out of the dorm.
Then Teresa and I will go for breakfast, shivering from the linkway between the girls' and guys' dorm, and from guys' dorm to cafeteria. After joining Miss Lim at a table, we'll look at the breakfast, grab chocolate milk, comment on how Theophila, Yanyao and Wern Chia must still be sleeping, etc.
Then more and more KSA students will start streaming in, dumping their bags/laptops on the farthest table and join the increasingly long queue. Shiqi will come and join us, probably only taking the milk.
Teresa and I will start commenting on the few recognizable students, whether it's someone's buddy, or the guy who looks like a girl, or that one with the broken leg, etc. When we're done, we'll go up to the seminar room to find Jolene, Cassandra or Melissa already at the computers with cup noodles half open.
Then just before the programme starts, William and the rest who skipped breakfast will come in looking disheveled or sleepy. Then we'll go on auditing classes, going for special lectures, following our buddies to their classes; maybe Taekwondo.
And in between, we'll be using the internet, transferring photos, teasing Miss Lim, doing chem homework, playing minesweeper...
Then maybe some buddies will come in and stop us from eating dinner, saying that they'll take us out for dinner and shopping. Then the whole big group of us plus Miss Lim will go out in 4 or so taxis, have dinner, walk around aimlessly, visit Etude house again, take neoprints, and return back at 10.30pm.
Then someone will order some chicken from the shop near the school, and half of us will go and stuff our faces in the empty cafeteria, while I start dying from the spiciness, and everyone else is fine.
Then we'll take turns bathing, until Wern Chia is the last one bathing at 12.30am or so. Then I'll go to Theophila's and Yanyao's room to borrow the hairdryer, and then return to the higher bed to sleep while Teresa is doing her work. Maybe we'll talk more on the events we had or people we were with today.
Then sleep will overcome me, until I wake up and continue this routine. Except that it'll be different. Maybe we'll go out on a trip and take photos of lovely scenery. Maybe we'll get to watch another Korean movie. Maybe we'll go do more research at ridiculous hours.
Maybe Wern Chia will borrow Miss Lim's phone again. Maybe William will go play soccer with the Russians. Maybe Cass's hair will stick out with static. Maybe Theophila and Teresa will start being lame and laughing insanely in the toilet. Maybe Yanyao will complain to her mother in rapid Chinese over msn. Maybe Mel will play dota, while Shiqi goes LOL over and over again. Maybe Jolene will show interesting pictures from Facebook.
Maybe at lunch we'll sit with our buddies, and laugh when Cheol Huan starts teasing Ji Eun and Ji Soo for being a secret couple, while the two of them violently protest. Maybe Dong Kyeong will explain more about last night's episode of Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi.
Maybe I'll go to see the orchestra practice, and grumble at how unfair it is that Dae Sik is that talented. Maybe we'll see William and Wern Chia playing that crazy billiards with their buddies, and losing miserably. Maybe we'll go karaoke where Jae Hyun and Jeong Huan scream their lungs out.
Maybe we'll go out with our old buddies like Yosub and Mi Kyeong. Maybe Jae Hyun will order another set of chicken at night, and In Hyi will come in halfway and take some.
Yeah right. It's never coming back.

Today is my father's birthday!!!! Not gonna say how old he is, but I hope he has a great birthday today!
I'm extremely cross. Apparently, while I am currently in Korea, Sheena and the rest organised a Choir BBQ at her house, at which there is fun, food, laughter, singing and sleeping over.
1. I suggested a bbq 2 or more months back already.
2. It just had to be at the time when I wasn't in Singapore.
3. Did I mention the fun, food, laughter and singing?? And supposedly bridge playing too!
4. Her house is so near, I would surely have been able to sleep over!!!!! or at least return at midnight with no worries.
5. I haven't been into her house before. I have also told her I wanted to see not just the outside.
6. And apparently some people did not bother to learn their parts for carols. Well, those brilliant people are not getting anything from Korea.
But anyway, I'm still having a good time in KSA. I wouldn't mind staying another week. Our ex-buddies Mi Kyeong, Yo Sub, In Hye and this other 3rd grader Jae Hyun took us out, and I finally got my picture of Kwang An Bridge at night! And we also played with firecrackers! Haha, it's illegal in Singapore.
The weather's become colder, and today we went to Taejongdae with the Russians who are visiting the school. It was really windy.
Gotta go for Taekwondo now.
